Garden Pond Liner
Simply speaking, a pond liner is a waterproof and flexible membrane that covers the floor and the sides of a pond. The pond enclosure may be dug into the soil, or it may be built above ground.
There are several different kinds of pond liner you can choose from and which one is best for you is dependent on your particular situation.
Simple construction grade polyethylene can be used for very large natural ponds, where the sides and bottom of the pond will be covered with a thick layer of soil. However, for the vast majority of backyard and patio ponds where the aquatic plants will be grown in containers, a PVC or rubber composition liner will be best.
For reflecting pools and some types of formal water features, a rubber liner that has been cut and welded to perfectly fit the corners and angles of the pool without creases or wrinkles is the perfect choice. These fitted liners are always designed and manufactured by professionals and are not suited for home improvement enthusiasts.
For most of us however, it is a matter of digging a hole to a predetermined shape, preparing the surface, and then putting in a liner. One important tip - Always dig the hole before you buy the liner. Pond excavations can easily end up being larger than was originally planned on paper and trying to fill in the hole because you discover your liner isn't large enough is a recipe for disaster.
To calculate the size of the liner you will need, take the length of the pond at its longest axis and then add to it twice the maximum depth. Then do the same bit of calculation for the width of the pond. For example, if you have a pond that is 10 feet long, 6 feet wide, and 2 feet deep, your calculations would be: 10 + 4 = 14 and 6 + 4 = 10 so the liner you would need would be 14ft x 10ft.
